Book Yourself Solid – A Chat with Michael Port

April 8th, 2013 by Bob Burg

If you are one of the many whose sales and marketing results took a giant leap upwards after studying Book Yourself Solid, then you know about Michael Port. While he gears his teaching mainly to owners of service-based business, his ingenious system will work for practically anyone who desires to provide great value to the lives of many customers and clients.

Michael PortHis newest work is somewhat of a re-creation of the original, but with a twist, and a huge one at that. It’s entitled, Book Yourself Solid ILLUSTRATED: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting MORE Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling. It has a lot less words to go along with very easy-to-follow pictures. And, the book’s “Visual Strategist” Jocelyn Wallace did an absolutely superb job of visually articulating Michael’s teachings.

In this chat, we’re going to discuss one chapter. And, if you will follow the advice Michael teaches regarding “The Four-Part Sales Formula,” you will most likely become much more effective when you ask for the sale. Simple as that. What he said was so important, we basically summed up our chat by running through it again.

Enjoy this chat with Michael Port:

The four modules Michael takes us through in his book include:

  1. Your Foundation: This includes his famous Red Velvet Rope Policy and developing your personal brand.
  2. Building Trust & Credibility: In this module he shows how to build credibility and likeability, his sales cycle process and more.
  3. Perfect Pricing and Simple Selling: Along with what we discussed today, you’ll learn about “Perfect Pricing.”
  4. The 6 Core Self-Promotion Strategies: Includes, Networking, Direct Outreach, Referrals, Websites and more.

“People buy to express their Values” this insight alone would be worth the 20 minutes of the interview. But The Four-Part Sales Formula make this one something really worth listening to AND apply it on our businesses.

By the way Bob, the audio quality on your recent interviews is sounding better than it was before. Not only your voice sounds more clear but it’s also at the same “loudness” level than your guests.

Again, thank you for sharing this one with us 🙂

Bruno: that IS a great insight, isn’t it. So very true! And, yes, I agree that his Four-Part Sales Formula is fantastic. Very glad you enjoyed it and found it to be of value. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! And, thank you for your feedback on the quality of the sound.

Great interview Bob! As someone who reads very slowly, I love the idea of illustrated books. (Loved your Go-Giver illustrated!!) I’ll be ordering the book today.

And I agree with Bruno, the overall sound quality seems to be improved. 🙂

    Thanks again. 🙂

Great interview with two of my favorite people talking about authentic selling. What a perfect match. I was sitting next to Michael when we saw Jocelyn’s picture of the Red Velvet Rope Policy. The rest, as they say, is history. And the next day I got to meet you for the first time, Bob. So fun.

I love how simple Michael said it, that “you’re my perfect client.” Which translates to a form of appreciation, i.e., empathy and understanding who they are, which works to connect with others because most people are starving for appreciation.
And when you appreciate them this way, they appreciate (as in grow in value) and become your best cheerleaders, too. I know you know this, of course, Bob, but I sure enjoyed your discussion with Michael and his creative new take expanding the reach of his classic work. Thanks!

Monica: Thank you. Indeed, that was great how Michael said it and the message that it communicated. And, I enjoyed your take on it. Thank you for sharing that with us!
