Back in 1996 a little book with a catchy title, Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive hit the market. As the book rapidly climbed to Number One on practically every major bestsellers list, the world would soon learn about the genius of an “envelope salesman” (Founder of the $100 million Mackay-Mitchell Envelope Company) from Minnesota by the name of Harvey Mackay.
I was one of the millions whose lives were touched and business made more profitable by the entertaining and brilliant business lessons in that book.
Now, 15 years and six New York Times Bestsellers (three of them #1) later, this mentor to many is back with a book that will provide us with an “MBA” in Selling.
Actually, it’s The Mackay MBA of Selling in the Real World. And, in this brief interview, he provides us with several nuggets of golden wisdom; two of these, if you will immediately take action on them, absolutely must increase your sales.
So, listen in and get some schoolin’ from a master teacher of business, entrepreneurship…and sales!

Hey Bob, how do you handle difficult customers who only wants to find some hole in your business in order to sink it? Do you just do your best to stay calm and then filter out their emails right into the trashcan or is there a smarter way to handle retarded people?
Bob,
Thanks for a great interview with Harvey Mackay. I had never heard of him until earlier this week when you posted the interview. I thought I would listen, “when I have the time.” Good intentions, but probably would take me months to get back to it.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of being in the audience in Chicago when you mentioned him again to the room. OK, note to self, listen to the interview. I just did. OMG, how have I not heard about him before. I just ordered his: Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive book. I will get to his new book.
He had so many nuggets of wisdom in the book……each of those nuggets will be blog posts titles for me. So thanks again, because all I need is the inspirational nugget when I am writing.
I now know why you were learning Mandarin too. 🙂
Hi Marty, thank you for writing. I’m sorry you are having difficulty with certain customers. From the information in your letter, I don’t know enough about the specifics to be able to formulate a helpful response. Feel free to email me at bob@burg.com with some specifics (of course, no names or other identifying info) 🙂 that will help me provide some productive options.
LOL. Wow – thank you, Jean. Glad to have introduced another person to Harvey. Yes, he is truly one of my heroes, and for very good reason! Not only is he brilliant…he’s a real “mensch!” 🙂
Bob/Harvey,
Thanks. I was in the same boat as Jean Kuhn… who is Harvey MacKay? Although I had heard of the book, “Swim with the Sharks”.
We’ve been in business for over 11 years and all came from a technical background (software developement consulting and products). We’ve done well but not to our full potential.
A few years ago I started focussing on that and realized that two things were true: We were not focussing enough on working on the business and we were not spending enought effort on mastering our sales/marketing skills. We’ve realized that there are loads of others in the same boat.
We’ve also started working on these things as much as we do our technical abilities. To that end I’ve been reading lots more sales and psychology type books. I recently ordered yours and I will be adding Harvey’s to my wish list for the next round.
Since then we have started seeing results and I’ve felt more excited about our living to our potential
Keep up the great content on your site. The way you connect with your audience is inspiring me to try to achieve the same.
Cheers.
Doug, thank you. What a kind compliment. Very appreciated! And, regarding Harvey, he is a “wealthspring” of information. He has lots of great books out there, and you’ll find any of them to add tremendous value to both your personal and business lives. Thank you for listening to the interview, and for taking the time to comment. Again, greatly appreciated!
So great to see you again at NSA.
Thanks for sharing the great interview with Harvey. You always bring out the best ideas in the people you interview.
See you soon.

Thank you Bob, for another interesting and informative interview, this time with Harvey Mackay!
My library has grown since I started listening to your interviews because you talk to some really great people. I do appreciate all the time and effort that goes into making these calls happen. I am looking forward to more!
