I really wasn’t planning to follow-up on yesterday’s post, which discussed how one begins their journey to success. However, this morning, while drinking my awesome Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, I reached into my library and pulled out one of my favorites, the 1909 classic, Peace * Power * Plenty by Orison Swett Marden, just to get my “inspiration fix.” 🙂
Born in 1850, Marden would become the founder of SUCCESS Magazine and write books that many claim began the Personal Development movement that continues to this day. Yet, most people have never heard of him.
About 15 years ago, one of my mentors from the National Speakers Association, Danny Cox, turned me on to Mr. Marden’s work. I’m forever grateful.
Here’s what I read this morning:
“Set the mind toward the thing you would accomplish so resolutely, so definitely, and with such vigorous determination, and put so much grit into your resolution, that nothing on earth can turn you from your purpose until you attain it.”
And the day begins.

Hi Bob, The quote reminds me of Napoleon Hill’s Definite Major Purpose. How does the writings of Orison Marden compare to the writings of Napoleon Hill? I’m familiar with Think and Grow Rich but have not read Mr Marden’s works yet. Which books do you recommend?
Tom, it does, doesn’t it? I have a feeling that Napoleon Hill either read Marden (from what I understand, most of them did) or many of those he intervied did. And, of course, success principles are success principles and tend not to vary that much from successful person to successful person. Regarding Mr. Marden’s works, I’d begin with “Peace*Power*Plenty” and go from there. Thank you for writing.
Wow. What a beautiful and timely quote. 🙂
