Perhaps the term, “Branding” has made it’s way into Buzzword Status. It seems as though the word is everywhere, with lots of experts showing us how to do it better. Well, there’s a good reason: it’s important! With more and more businesses and more and more media combining to bring us more and more messages (a/k/a interruptions) the ability to cut through the noise and be positioned as the resource of choice in your field is ever more vital.
Regarding the proliferation of experts, there are indeed some excellent ones. One of them, John Morgan, has been doing it very successfully for clients large and small for quite a while now. He’s finally put his knowledge and wisdom in a new book and — in an excellent piece of branding — entitled it, Brand Against The Machine.
In this discussion, we look at topics such as what branding is, and what it is not! Why we should brand. The difference between marketing and branding. Why your brand must stand for something. Why you need not be a celebrity in order to powerfully brand yourself. And most counter-intuitively, why #1 is perhaps the worst number in business!
John is a great guy; very knowledgeable and with a terrific message.

Have you branded yourself effectively? How did you do it? What concepts, thoughts and ideas did you take away from John’s advice that you can begin to think about and apply right away? Please feel free to share them with us.

That’s a great interview. I’m not comfy with the “self promotion,” so I’ll look at what he says, about it not being about me, but about what I can do for someone. I may give it shot with that in mind. (maybe) 🙂
I love that “Your brand is what others think of you.” This interview has me asking, ‘What do our brides think of us?’
EVERYONE loves you, Amy. You’ve done it right!!
Excellent interview! Love the discussion of not being number one in your business. In relation to positioning and self promotion it reminds me of something one of my teachers said, “Many times the true leaders are those who are quiet.” As Amy so perfectly put it, What do others think of us? Words of wisdom as always. Great post! Keep em coming please 🙂
Leigh, thank you for sharing your (and your teacher’s) great insights!
What an inspiration! I loved the differentiation between marketing and branding and the emphasis on what others think of you, not what you think of yourself. I just ordered the book and can’t wait to start reading and applying the information. Thanks for sharing such valuable insights.
Thank you, Kate. So glad you enjoyed the interview, and the wisdom John shared with us. Glad you’re getting the book; I think you’ll really enjoy it and find it to be of great value!
Thanks for the kinds words from all of you! Bob & I had a lot of fun recording this interview. I’m looking forward to knowing what you all think of the book!
